Privacy
Your information.
This page explains what we do with the personal information you give us through this website, and what you can ask us to do about it. We are The Athens Yacht Club, a Greek restaurant at 179 Victoria Street in Christchurch. Despite the name there is no club to join and no membership list, so we hold no member records. We handle personal information under the Privacy Act 2020.
The short version: we collect what we need to answer you, feed you and keep in touch if you have asked us to. We do not sell it.
When you enquire.
The forms on our contact and functions pages ask for your name and email, and, depending on what you are asking about, your phone number, the date you have in mind, how many people are coming, the occasion, what your enquiry is about, and your message.
We use it to reply to you and to plan your booking or your event. Your enquiry arrives in an inbox in our content management system, which is run for us by Distinct Studio, the studio that built and looks after this site, and that system also emails it to the team here at the restaurant.
Your device's IP address is sent along with the form so our system can check the message is not spam and that nobody is flooding the form. We do not use it to identify you.
How long we keep an enquiry: we keep it for as long as we need it to look after your booking and to answer anything that follows from it, and we delete it once we no longer need it.
When you book a table.
Our booking page uses NowBookIt, a booking system run by another company. The details you type into it go to NowBookIt, not into this website, and they are handled under NowBookIt's own privacy policy and terms. We see your booking in NowBookIt so we can hold your table and get your night right.
What is collected while you browse.
Like most websites, ours gathers some information about how it is being used. Three things do this:
- Google Analytics, loaded through our Google Tag Manager container, which tells us things like how many people visited, which pages they read, roughly where in the world they are, and what kind of device they used.
- A Meta pixel, also loaded through that container, which is on every page and lets us see how our Facebook and Instagram posts are doing.
- A page counter built into our content management system, which counts page views for our own reporting. It does not use cookies and does not identify you.
Google Analytics and the Meta pixel use cookies and similar technology, and the information they collect goes to Google and to Meta as well as to us.
We do not put a cookie pop-up in front of you when you arrive. New Zealand law does not require one, and we would rather tell you here what loads and how to stop it than make you click a box before you can read the menu.
Turning that off.
You have a few options, and all of them are in your hands rather than ours:
- Your browser's settings let you block or delete cookies, including third-party cookies, for this site or for every site.
- Google publishes an opt-out add-on for Google Analytics at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, which stops Google Analytics on every site you visit.
- Your Facebook or Instagram ad settings, and the ad settings on your phone or computer, control how your activity is used for advertising.
The site works perfectly well with all of it switched off.
Who else sees your information.
Beyond our own team, your information is handled by:
- Distinct Studio, who built this website and look after it for us, and the content management system they run, which holds the forms inbox and the page counter.
- Vercel, which hosts this website.
- Google and Meta, through the analytics and pixel described above.
- NowBookIt, for table bookings, under its own policy.
Google, Meta and Vercel are overseas companies, and the information they hold for us is stored outside New Zealand. Before we use a provider like that we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that they protect personal information with safeguards comparable to the ones the Privacy Act requires here.
We will also share information if the law requires us to, and we will say so if that ever happens and we are allowed to.
Keeping it safe.
We only give our team and our providers access to what they need, our website and systems use encrypted connections, and accounts are protected by passwords held by the people who need them. No system is perfect, and we would never tell you otherwise, but we treat your details as something to look after rather than something to collect.
Seeing it and correcting it.
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and you can ask us to correct it if it is wrong. You do not need a reason and it does not cost anything.
Ask us any of these ways:
- Email office@athensyachtclub.co.nz
- Call 03 365 0435
- Write to The Athens Yacht Club, 179 Victoria Street, Christchurch
Tell us what you are after and how to reach you. The Act gives us 20 working days to respond, and we will usually be quicker than that. If we cannot give you something, we will tell you why.
You can also ask us to delete what we hold, and we will unless we are required to keep it.
If you are not happy.
Tell us first, at office@athensyachtclub.co.nz, and we will do our best to sort it out. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled it, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, who looks after the Privacy Act. They are at privacy.org.nz and on 0800 803 909, and they can look into a complaint about us for free.
Changes to this page.
If what we collect changes, we will update this page. The date below tells you when we last did.
